better yourself, do what matters most, Goethe, Inspirational, small changes

So often we get caught up in the little things of life, running around; “got to go here, got to do this, got to do that” But with all of this running around are you doing what matters most to you?

If writing your screenplay has been calling you, and it’s important to your life, but you don’t seem to have the time to accomplish it, ask yourself; do I really need to spend all this time putting up pictures on instagram or push the “like” button one more time on Facebook?

If spending time with your family is number one on your list, do you really need to take on a third volunteer job?

Why do we often seem to spend time on everything but what our heart calls us to do? Take a look at your life, ask yourself, “what matters most to me?” Are you doing this?

It would be a shame to look back on your life and know you were the queen of social media but never went back to school to become the nurse you’ve always wanted to be. Take a tip from Goethe and put the things that matter most, first.

As you better yourself, you better the world

“You see, faced with a choice between two tasks, my tendency was to choose whichever seemed easier at the moment. I desired an immediate benefit over a future blessing.”   -Glynis Whitwer

Most of us love to check things off our list; reply to emails, check. Call Beth, check. Yay, look how much I did today! But deep down inside anxiety builds as you realize it would have been a much wiser choice to write a chapter for the novel you’ve been meaning to finish, or begin the report before the deadline is in your face.

Often we choose to do a task that gives instant gratification rather than doing the one that rewards us in the future.

But we all know the tortoise wins the race in the end. (if you’ve never read the The Tortoise and the Hare, I highly suggest doing so). I believe in this fast past world we need to take a look at the tortoise; how he slowly and steadily plugs along one step at a time. He seems to have much less anxiety in fact he seems to be enjoying his journey.

I definitely can’t say I have all the answers on this subject, but I do know if I just show up, and do a little everyday, my life becomes a lot lighter, I sleep better at night and I’m getting that much closer to the finish line.

As I’m writing this, I’m looking out my window to the pond behind our house, all around it are trees with only branches sticking out and dead grass, but it’s absolutely beautiful. Sure it’s not springtime with the colors and leaves, flowers and greenery, but it has it’s own perfection.

Much like the Byrds song “Turn Turn Turn,” we can realize there are distinct seasons of our lives. If we are facing turbulent times we know spring is just around the corner. If we’ve had much fame and success and there seems to be a slowing down, much like an athlete out of his prime, an aging beauty queen, or a family who’s last child has left  the house, we can focus not only on the memories but on who we are in this season and how we can contribute with the wisdom we’ve gained. Your life may not look the same as it once did but like seasons show you, there is still much beauty and perfection to be had.

Turn! Turn! Turn!   -The Byrds

To everything – turn, turn, turn
There is a season – turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything – turn, turn, turn
There is a season – turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together

To everything – turn, turn, turn
There is a season – turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time of war, a time of peace
A time of love, a time of hate
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing

To everything – turn, turn, turn
There is a season – turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate
A time of peace, I swear it’s not too late

As you better yourself, you better the world

Happy 2016! My wish for you this year is to realize your happiness, your contentment is at your fingertips. I can’t remember where I found this quote, so apologies to the person who said this;

“Become curator of your own contentment”

One meaning for the word curator is; a manager, a superintendent. You are the manager of your own contentment. Although it may look like “outside” things bring you happiness, it actually lies in your hands.

But what I really like about the word curator is it’s prime meaning; the person in charge of a museum, art collection, etc. Our contentment is like this art collection. We can choose everyday, every moment, what we want to feel, like this collection we can pull the ugly or beautiful pieces off the shelf to be displayed in our lives. Please realize though, you are the one pulling the pieces. It is you who chooses how to face the business meeting, it is you who can put an end to a fight with your sister, it is you who reacts to the driver that cuts you off. This is what will keep you in anger and resentment or move you in to a life of peace and contentment.

Many blessings for a new year filled with peace and contentment,
Maria

As you better yourself, you better the world.
